Help

The home page of the International Bank of Educational Objects (BIOE) has features that allow the recovery of content, in other words, access to educational objects available at BIOE. The home page maintains the basic structure of repositories based on DSpace and is divided into four main parts: Header, Sidebar Menu, Desktop and Footer.

  • Back to topHeader

is divided into two parts: internal and external access to the repository. In the scope outside the repository, identifies the governmental entity responsible for BIOE, in this case the Ministry of Education (MEC), and allows access to other services offered by the MEC. The scope inside the repository presents: BIOE’s logo, which identifies the site and allows you to access the home page of the bank; Search Engine, responsible for locating educational objects through the use of simple terms (one word) or compound (more than one word), the search result appears on the desktop of the page; Language Tools, which allows you to choose the language in which you want to view the homepage, messages and buttons from BIOE. Currently BIOE is available in Portuguese, English and Spanish; Accessibility Tools, which allow the increase of font’s size and the adjustment of contrast; User ID, displays the name of the registered user, logged in the repository. It’s nice to keep in mind that the recovery of objects is free to all users, there is no need to login to locate and download objects, but those who want more features, can register on BIOE, which is free and allows, for example, sending alerts of new items.

  • Back to topSidebar menu

the side navigation menu has two separate sessions. The first refers to the location of educational objects and the second to the tool of support and administration of the Bank. The location allows you to see the organization of the Bank, which is divided into levels of education and type of resources. In this session educational objects deposited in BIOE can be recovered in the form of lists. For more information, see Browse. The support and administration tools are only available to registered users. For more information see: sBank Login.

  • Back to topDesktop

area where information is displayed. The results of the recovery of educational objects are listed in this area. Offers some readiness of navigation and search. The desktop can be divided into: location bar, navigation options, search engine with filter and news side bar.

  • Back to topFooter

this area is visible on all pages. Contains information about the project and has a facility for sending messages to BIOE’s support team.

Desktop

The desktop can be divided into: location bar, navigation options, search engine with filter and news side bar.

  • Back to topLocation bar

    identifies the system’s area in which the user is browsing. The presented information is made up of links that allow you to return to another point in the system. When navigating through the pages of the Bank new links will be added to the Location Bar, allowing greater independence to the user navigation;

  • Back to topNavigation area

presents the access links to the hierarchical levels that structure BIOE. Through these links, you can navigate through levels of education and find the educational objects classified by area and type of resource. For more information see: Browse.

  • Back to topSearch engine with filter

enables retrieval of educational objects by restricting the search by: country, language and type of resource. The filters work by restricting the search only for educational objects that have the selected feature, so when choosing the language "Portuguese" and the feature "video", the search will be made only in videos classified in Portuguese language. For more information see: Search.

  • Back to topSide bar

features news of interest to BIOE. The home page offers the functionality of feed subscription (RSS) and viewing of news provided by the Administrator. In the pages relating to levels of education and type of resource, this area offers the latest deposited objects.

Find Educational Object

To locate and retrieve educational objects there are two basic paths: through the search engine or browsing through the Bank. The use option of the search engine has three features: simple search, search with filter and advanced search. The simple search allows you to retrieve educational objects by simple terms (one word) or compound (more than one word). The search with filter lets you retrieve educational resources restricted by country, language and type of resource. The advanced search offers a number of features and intersections between the fields, through the use of Boolean operators. The search results will be displayed on the desktop. To access the educational object, simply click on the title of the object.

  • Back to topSimple Search

The Simple Search tool appears in the header at the top right and is available on all pages of the Bank. The Simple Search searches for the informed term in all description fields of the educational object. The result is presented in the form of lists ranked by title on the desktop.

  • Back to topSearch with Filter

The search with filter allows you to retrieve educational objects by country, language and type of resource. The Boolean operator linking the options is "and". Thus, when you select the country "Brazil", the resource type "video" and put the word "geography" in the search box, the tool will search all over BIOE for all the geography videos produced in Brazil.

  • Back to topAdvanced Search

The Advanced Search allows you to specify fields and make combinations between fields via the Boolean operators "AND", "OR" or "NOT”. To use this feature select the "Advanced Search" option, available on the page header, then select the desired field in the left and enter the term on the right. If you want to use more than one field, choose the Boolean operator between fields and enter the term for the search. You can narrow the search to a community or search the entire repository. To narrow the search to a community, just select it from the list that appears at the top of the form. The default is to search the entire repository.

    Note

Completion of the advanced search form should be made in descending order, i.e., from top to bottom. One can not, for example, fill the first line, skip the second and fill the third.

Some important information

The repository uses the Jakarta Lucene search engine. Some important information to carry out a search:

  • Back to topWhere the search is performed

The search is made in the metadata of the resource, i.e., in all fields that describe the resource, such as author, title, etc. The words used for the search are compared with the ones existing in these metadata.

  • Back to topStop Words: Words not allowed in the search

Some words are not considered in searches, such as articles, prepositions and / or conjunctions. These words are not indexed to speed up the search. Some of these words in English are listed below: "a", "and" , "are" , "as" , "at" , "be" , "but" , "by" , "for" , "if" , "in" , "into", "is" ,"it" ,"no" , "not" , "of" , "on" , "or" , "such", "the" , "to" , "was", etc.

  • Back to topTruncation

The truncation allows you to locate an object using only a part of the word. This is useful when there is a spelling doubt. To best use this feature use an asterisk (*) after the word to be found indicating that you want to check the items with words beginning with the searched fragment. To better illustrate, all the objects in your description that have words beginning with "educ *" are searched, and they may be: education, educational, educate, educated, etc.

  • Back to topRecover morphological variations (Stemming)

The search engine automatically expands the word, being able to recover words that are in the plural or inflected. Example: If the search is for "fish", it will also recover "fishing", "fished", etc.

  • Back to topSearch by phrase

Search by phrase To search for a compound or phrase you must put quotation marks (“ ”) around them. To better illustrate, all objects that have the words "dog and cat" in this format in their description are searched.

  • Back to topBoolean operator AND

Allows you to find the objects that mandatorily contain the searched words in their description. The Boolean operator (“AND”) must necessarily be written in capital letters, so that the search engine can distinguish between the conjunction and the Boolean operator. To better illustrate, all the objects that mandatorily have the words "technical" AND "education" in their description, regardless of the order or the place where they appear, are searched.

    Important!

Note that these words can be in separate fields or in reverse order.

  • Back to topBoolean operator OR

Allows you to find the objects that have in their descriptions at least one of the searched words. The Boolean operator (“OR”) must necessarily be written in capital letters, so that the search engine can distinguish between the conjunction and the Boolean operator. To better illustrate, all the objects that have the words "technical" or the word "superior" in their description, regardless of the order or the place where they appear, are searched.

    Important!

Note that these words can be in separate fields or in reverse order.

  • Back to topBoolean operator NOT

Allows you to find the objects that have in their descriptions the first, but not the second word searched. The Boolean operator (“NOT”) must necessarily be written in capital letters, so that the search engine can distinguish between the conjunction and the Boolean operator. To better illustrate, all the objects that mandatorily have the word "education" and don’t have the word "technical" in their description are searched.

    Important!

The Boolean operator NOT is used to narrow the search.

  • Back to topThe use of parentheses

Parentheses can be used to group search terms. This technique helps to facilitate the creation of more complex queries, because it creates a precedence in the search, which searches first for the grouped terms. To better illustrate, all the objects that mandatorily have the words "house" and "cat" in their description are searched.

    Important!

The order and the operators change the outcome, so they may or may not be the same that was used in the search argument .

Bank Login

You can log in the Bank through the option My Space, located on the sidebar menu at the homepage.

  • Back to topNew user

The bank login allows access to various facilities, for example, to receive notices of new deposits in resource types of interest (alert service). The BIOE has a simple registration system based on communication via electronic messages. The My Space menu allows the new user to register himself through the link "New User". The self-registration is mediated by electronic mail (e-mail). The personal identification (user id) is a valid e-mail address used for communication. Because, when you click on the link "New User", a page will appear asking you to inform a valid e-mail address. After completing the field and clicking on subscribe, the system will send an electronic message to the previously informed e-mail address to continue the registration. The electronic message sent will test the e-mail address and confirm the registration. The message will contain a link that will allow you to identify yourself and enter a password. Then, at the end of the process, you can make use of the facilities offered to registered users.
